[ Summary ] Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a rapidly growing global health problem. It has been postulated that CKD is an independent risk factor for cognitive decline. Dementia in patients with CKD is associated with a high risk of death, dialysis withdrawal, hospitalization, and disability. There are a variety of risk factors for dementia related to CKD. These include shared risk factors, nephrogenic risk factors, and treatment associated risk factors. Cognitive changes in CKD more typically indicate a combination of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Preventive strategies targeting vascular risk factor modification and physical and cognitive activity have shown promise in the general population and may be reasonably extrapolated to the CKD population. Further studies are required to establish successful treatments or to prevent cognitive impairment associated with CKD.
