[ Summary ] Hemodialysis patients have a compromised immune system and nutritional deficiencies, both of which are associated with a higher incidence of malignant tumors and infections.
The incidence of prostate cancer in hemodialysis patients is expected to increase markedly as the population ages. There are a number of therapeutic options for prostate cancer, including prostatectomy, brachytherapy, external beam radiation therapy, and endocrine therapy. It is necessary to decide on a therapy plan taking into account the prognoses of hemodialysis patients.
Urinary tract infections which develop in hemodialysis patients often progresses into a chronic, severe status because of low urine volume and bladder stasis. Infectious renal cysts are sometimes resistant to certain types of antibiotics, requiring drainage procedures or nephrectomies. We discuss diagnoses of and therapies for prostate cancer and urinary tract infections in hemodialysis patients.
