[ Summary ] Recently, patients and their families have become more dependent on medical staff members, and require more intensive medical services. As a result, nurses in hemodialysis (HD) units now experience chronic emotional stress, which can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout syndrome. We investigate stress and burnout in HD facilities. It is suggested that the individual character of workers, their working environment and support from supervisors are stronger factors than overwork in determining stress and burnout. Updating systems for nursing practices and modes of administration to provide better working environments is thought to be a key to overcoming these concerns.
