[ Summary ] |
Plasmapheresis (PP) is a well established therapeutic procedure commonly used for many neurologic disorders. It is believed that the beneficial effects of PP occur through the elimination of pathogenic inflammatory mediators, including autoantibodies, complement components, and cytokines. In several neurologic disorders, randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy of PP. Recent studies have revealed that neuromyelitis optica and anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis are associated with autoantibodies in relation to their pathogenesis. PP may be a future treatment for these disorders. Therapeutic approaches incorporating PP are also ongoing for Alzheimer's disease. |
