[ Summary ] Exercise training such as walking is considered to be a first line therapy for PAD patients who suffer from intermittent claudication. A number of prospective studies have shown that exercise improves walking ability and quality of life in patients with claudication. The improvements gained from exercise are thought to be related to improved angiogenesis and nitric oxide release, which improves endotherial dysfunction and exercise tolerance. A high prevalence of claudication in dialysis patients, documented low activity levels in this population, and lack of exercise counseling in dialysis units suggest that exercise therapy could be an important area for intervention.
