[ Summary ] The management of renal anemia is very important for patients receiving dialysis because it is linked with mortality, cardiovascular events, and quality of life. ESA treatment plays a central role in increasing and maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) levels in dialysis patients. However, there are some patients who can not reach target Hb levels. Therapeutic approaches for cases with ESA resistance and Hb variability are problems which must be dealt with in the future. New strategies for renal anemia management are expected. Hepcidin 25 is a new marker of iron metabolism and its assay will be available in the near future. By using new ESAs, including darbepoetin alfa, CERA, and HematideTM, we may manage renal anemia more easily and effectively.
