[ Summary ] Operating conditions for QB, QD, or QF are the most critical factors in illustrating the best qualities of artificial kidneys (dialysis membranes and hemodiafilters). QB and QD are important for the removal of substances through diffusion. Therefore, the degree of stagnation of the substances to be removed within the dialysis membrane must be minimized to the greatest extent possible while giving proper consideration to the overall mass transfer coefficient which is an indicator of substance mobility in semipermiable membranes. QF is a condition mainly applied to the removal of substances through filtration such as hemofiltration or hemodiafiltration. The removal of substances through filtration requires high filtration rates and minimization of effects due to the concentration polarized layers causing reverse diffusion. For this reason, condition must be established to increase QB in order to increase shear rates.
