[ Summary ] Uremic pruritis is a common complication in dialysis patients. Severe uremic pruritus caused by multiple factors, not only affects the quality of life, but also may be associated with poor long term outcomes. Higher dialysis efficacy, use of more permeable dialysis membranes, low dialysate calcium concentrations and hemodiafiltration (HDF) may be effective in suppressing uremic pruritis. Furthermore, numerous reports have noted that pruritus can be ameliorated through the use of PMMA membranes (BG series). These may consequently improve outcomes for patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis therapy.
