[ Summary ] The importance of dental care has becom widely accepted. The aim is to improve the quality of life for dialysis patients by providing guidance for dental self-care by outpatient dialysis patients based on oral assessments. This guidance includes an explanation of the importance of dental care, including brushing and other techniques, in addition to coping strategies when problems occur. The three main factors in providing this guidance are (1) including not only explanations but actual demonstrations and practice of techniques, (2) providing guidance to work together with patients to determine methods which he or she can use, in consideration of their lifestyle, and (3) guidance which will continue until the patient's dental status is improved. Implementing this enhanced dental care requires guidance for the family and regular professional care in cooperation with a local dentist. Issues that remain to be addressed are ensuring time for dental guidance and improving assessment ability.
