[ Summary ] The concept of "chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD)" treatment is centered on avoiding mortality. From the viewpoint of CKD-MBD treatment, it is of great importance to prevent parathyroid gland hyperplasia in order to maintain proper serum calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone levels over the long term. Qualitative and quantitative changes in nodular-type parathyroid hyperplasia are considered to be irreversible. Because of this it is better to inhibit parathyroid cell proliferation from the early stages of secondary hyperparathyroidism. The mechanisms of parathyroid hyperplasia are extrapolated and elucidated in relation to prevention of parathyroid gland growth.
