[ Summary ] | The usual guidelines for HBV infection may beapplied to dialysis patients. Interferon alpha and nucleoside analogues arep rimarily used for the treatment of HBV infection. The goal of treatment is suppression of HBV replication, normalization of serum ALT levels, and improvements in liver histology, to prevent the development of complications such as cirrhosis, hepatic failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Most dialysis patients with acute HBV infection become chronic carriers. In addition, hypotransaminasemia and relatively low levels of HBV DNA may be observed in dialysis patients. For antiviral treatment for those patients, dosage andinterval of administration should be adjusted as well as monitoring of frequent side effects. |
