[ Summary ] In the 1950's, hemodialysis machines required blood priming procedures. Massive blood transfusions were required and hepatitis infections were very common. Blood donation systems and blood screening reduced the risk of post-transfusion hepatitis. The introduction of erythropoietin treatment reduced the need for transfusions. The risk of viral hepatitis is still present for hemodialysis patients. On-going continuous education concerning safety procedures and the introduction of prefilled syringes may further reduce the risk of viral hepatitis. Interferon therapy may finally eradicate viral hepatitis infections in dialysis patients.
