[ Summary ] Anemia treatments for hemodialysis patients have reached a major turning point. This is because a new erythropoiesis stimulating agents which can help us reach recommended target hemoglobin levels has become available in Japan. Recent clinical studies have disclosed that higher target hemoglobin levels are harmful because serious adverse events and hospitalization rates increased in higher hemoglobin groups. These results are contradictory to those of observational studies, leading the clinical hemodialysis treatment field to fall into great disarray. However, re-analysis of those clinical studies has revealed that resistance to erythropoiesis treatment is of prime importance. Daily health management to eliminate infection is the most important tool to treat anemia experienced by hemodialysis patients.
