[ Summary ] Disturbances in mineral and bone metabolism are prevalent in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are an important cause of morbidity and extraskeletal calcification that have been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality.
The global non-profit foundation known as Kidney Disease:Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) was established in 2003. The KDIGO sponsored the Controversies Conference on Renal Osteodystrophy, conducted in 2006 and recommended the term "CKD―mineral and bone disorder" (CKD―MBD) be used to describe a broader clinical syndrome that develops as a systemic disorder related to mineral and bone metabolism and/or extra-skeletal calcification. The Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) also released their "Guidelines for the Management of Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Chronic Dialysis Patients" in 2006. The worldwide effort to reduce mortality rates for CKD patients is ongoing.
