[ Summary ] The etiology of children with end-stage renaldisease (ESRD) is reviewed based on Japanese National Registry data from the Japanese Society for Pediatric Nephrology, data from the Japanese Society for Transplantation, the Japanese Pediatric Kidney Transplant Study Group, and data from the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Studies. Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and hereditary disorders were common causes for ESRD in children. It was noteworthy that a substantial number of pediatric ESRD patients had many extra-renal manifestations. Also, there were many pediatric ESRD patients in the 15 to 19 year old group. More effort to define the epidemiology of pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) is essential to develop better treatments for children with CKD.
