[ Summary ] Patients not satisfied with treatment and explanations provided by medical professionals and who stubbornly make repeated, unreasonable demands may be termed "monster patients". These patients are not large in number but a few exist in every dialysis facility. They are a source of trouble for staff members. If these patients are not handled effectively by dialysis facilities, emotional exhaustion and feelings of ineffectiveness may result in 'burnout' by staff members. If a firm stance by all staff members in refusing to accept these unreasonable demands does not bring about a change in the patient’s behavior, then suggesting a change in facilities is one approach to the problem. However, we must be prudent in employing this approach as it is our duty to provide medical treatment. In the end, it may be advisable to obtain the counsel of a lawyer.
