[ Summary ] Dialysis requires ongoing treatment throughout the life of ESRD patients. It is thought that, the mental stress experienced by dialysis nurses, due to administration of treatment. Psychological characteristic of individual dialysis patients may affect their motivation to take care of themselves. In our analysis of the relationship between the psychological stress and nurse burnout, due to dialysis practice, high "burnout rates" were observed in these care givers. The mental stress involved is due to the necessity to inject patients through A-V fistula, psychological conflicts with patients and management of incidents which occur during dialysis sessions. To reduce this psychological stress, the structure of the occupational environment requires improvements in education, support for co-workers and overall career development.
