[ Summary ] Since 1990 mortality rates for breast cancer have decreased in the U.S. and the U.K. partly due to mammography screening. On the other hand, mortality rates in Japan are still increasing. Therefore, we should encourage women over 40 to periodically have mammography screenings. Ultrasonography is another useful detection method especially for dense breast tumors in the 30-40 age group. Patients receiving hemodialysis should pay much more attention to breast cancer screening because early detection and sentinel lymph node biopsies could avoid unnecessary axillary dissection, which sometimes causes cellulitis and arm edema.
