[ Summary ] Most vascular access (VA) complications are caused by stenosis. Maintaining patency requires appropriate monitoring, as well as vascular access interventional therapy (VAIVT).
Angiography is the best method for evaluation of VA. However, considering the invasiveness of angiography, screening all patients would prove difficult. It is however useful in screening for a limited number of patients for whom artificial venousgrafts (AVG) or VAIVT are necessary.
Noninvasive Doppler ultrasonography is appropriate for VA screening but obtaining a complete overall images is difficult and in some cases angiography may be necessary prior to conducting VAIVT. It is important for each dialysis facility to decide on a VA monitoring program and to perform screening appropriate to the needs of the individual patient.
