[ Summary ] Protein-energy malnutrition is frequently seen in patients with chronic renal failure. The intravenous or oral administration of amino acids is useful for treating these patients. However, it is important that sufficient energy is supplemented with a specific amino acids formula prepared for patients with renal failure. The content of branched-chain amino acids such as leucine and isoleucine should be increased, and the quantities of methionine and phenylalanine should be decreased. Although these types of formulas have been developed for parenteral injection, oral agents are not yet available in Japan.
