[ Summary ] Oral nutrition should always be the first source of energy, followed by enteral nutrition and parenteral nutrition. Enteral nutrition is safer and cheeper than parenteral nutrition. Enteral nutrition sometimes induces sodium and potassium deficits. Therefore, proper nutritional monitoring is important.
Diarrhea is the most frequent adverse effect associated with enteral nutrition. Diluted enteral foodstuffs should be administered at slow rates employing continuous infusion pumps. Care must be taken to avoid aspiration pneumonia when administering enteral nutrition.
