[ Summary ] Since the metabolism of lipids and fatty acids is altered in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), dietary fatty acid composition is very important for patients with CKD. This is especially so for polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) which have been reported to be associated with inflammatory and immune diseases because they are the major components of cytoplasmic membranes and are the precursor fatty acids for prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Fatty acid emulsions are useful for patients who cannot consume them orally to supply the calories and the essential fatty acids needed. Emulsions are particularly useful for patients with renal insufficiency to supply adequate calories without volume overload.
