[ Summary ] Self-management becomes an essential component of the treatment and care for people with chronic kidney disease, which requires pharmacological treatment, diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. This article introduces the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP), developed at Stanford University, and provides definitions, theoretical background, mechanisms for effectiveness, and teaching strategies for enhancing self-efficacy. Differences between CDSMP and disease-specific patient education, and also between CDSMP and support groups, are discussed. Based on research findings and participants' comments, it concludes that the CDSMP seems to be effective for Japanese people with chronic conditions.
