[ Summary ] The number of end-stage dialysis patients is increasing in Japan. Research conducted by the Japanese association of dialysis physicians in 2007 estimated that over ten thousand dialysis patients are hospitalized longer than three months in this country. The number of patients who can not attend dialysis clinics because of their low ADL is increasing. More than half of these patients are hospitalized in small facilities. Nursing homes seldom accept those patients because of the facilities' medical capabilities and the limitations of careinsurance. Many small hospitals are facing difficulties under health care reforms being put in place. Therefore, the shortage of care facilities for end-stage dialysis patients may become a social problem in the near future.
