[ Summary ] Recently, risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients on chronic dialysis, have been studied. It is now widely recognized that those factors such as oxidative stress, micro-inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, are involved with an increased risk of death from CVD in those patients. Based on this concept, new dialysis modalities, including daily HD, on-line hemodiafiltration, and a combination of PD and HD, have been studied in hope of providing improvements in surrogate markers for those risks. The possibility that those modalities may benefit patient outcomes warrants further study.
