[ Summary ] The number of living donor kidney transplant recipients in Japan has increased over the past six years, probably due to the introduction of laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and powerful immunosuppressive drugs. ABO-incompatible and living non biologically related (primarily married couples) kidney transplants have become widely accepted. Consequently, the total number of Japanese kidney transplants was more than one thousand 2006. Furthermore, preemptive kidney transplantation has produced improvements in long-term graft outcomes.
However, the number of cadaver kidney transplants in Japan is still quite small. There are a number of reasons for the small number of kidney donations. Socio-economic support may contribute to an increase in the number of kidney donations.
