[ Summary ] Fundamental technologies such as hemodialysis (HD) have been established for dialysis therapies. Quality of life (QOL) for dialysis patients, however, is inferior to that of individuals in normal health. Innovation in dialysis therapy is strongly required to improve the QOL and the general physical condition of dialysis patients.
In conventional intermittent dialysis treatment, it is most important to insure that plasma refilling from the extravascular to the intravascular compartments and dialyzer performance, are maintained as well. An adequate ultrafiltration pattern should be determined for each patient to avoid rapid drops in patient blood pressure and by monitoring cardiac output as well as peripheral blood flow rates. The development of dialysis machines with optional functions such as indicating Kt/V values through continuous monitoring of solute concentrations in the spent dialysate and adjusting internal filtration to achieve higher solute removal efficiency, due to convective transport is necessary soon.
