[ Summary ] Health management prior to initiation of dialysis and subsequent renal failure, strongly affects the outcome of renal replacement therapy (RRT).
Control of blood pressure and renal anemia can have particularly positive effects on slowing regression of renal function and preventing the onset of cardiovascular events. These measures lead to improved post RRT prognoses.
However, nephrologists must have the help of other medical professionals in treating the estimated 20 million CKD patients in Japan. Medical professionals, including general practitioners, nurses, dietitians and social workers must realize that CKD treatment is both a critical and widespread health issue, requiring their fullest efforts.
