[ Summary ] Renal anemia is related to erythropoietin (EPO) deficiencies with impaired renal functions. EPO production depends on tissue specificity and hypoxia-induced mechanism. EPO plays an important role in regulation of the processing of erythroid burst-forming units to erythroid colony-forming units. Recently, many investigations have focused on target hemoglobin (Hb) levels to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD). In 2004, guidelines for renal anemia treatment were formulated by the Japanese Society of Dialysis Therapy. It is important to refine the guidelines to assess Hb levels in preventing CVD in dialysis patients.
