[ Summary ] In comparison to the general population, dialysis patients have significantly higher rates of cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, it is important to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
Recent studies of the general population have revealed that strict management of high blood glucose levels and lipid abnormalities reduces cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates. Several observational studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between high cholesterol concentrations or high HbA1c values and cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients. However, large prospective interventional studies, demonstrating the beneficial effects of cholesterol lowering therapies and strict glycemic control in the reduction of cardiovascular events do not exist. Further studies are needed to confirm whether the strict management of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia after induction of dialysis therapy can improve cardiovascular outcomes.
