[ Summary ] PD therapy has only slightly increased in Japan. The two reasons for this are as follows : (1) Although the frequency of peritonitis has decreased, the fear of infectious peritonitis and peritoneal sclerosis still exists. (2) It is necessary for patients who do not know medical techniques including a sterile procedures to learn them. The solution for the latter problem must come from changes in the present medical support for patients. This should be accomplished using all methods of cooperation, such as cooperation between medical providers, including inter-regional associations, and domestic cooperation. This is especially so for CAPD patients who can not easily act independently and need the support of these organizations. The NPO Organization for CAPD Support was established in order to achieve this goal. This organization has obtained help from various people and became active three years ago. Implementation of NPO functios should be carried out rapidly to provide improved patient support.
