[ Summary ] It is a major challenge to reduce peritoneal dysfunction (loss of ultrafiltration) and morphological changes (peritoneal sclerosis) in patients on long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD).
There is accumulating evidence that the bioincompatibility of conventional PD solutions (due to a low pH, high glucose concentration, hyperosmolality, and glucose degradation products) leads to adverse effects on the peritoneum.
As a result of increased awareness about the unwanted effects of conventional PD solutions, neutral PD solutions with improved biocompatibility have been developed and marketed in Japan. Several studies have demonstrated both short-term and long-term beneficial effects of neutral PD solutions. Accordingly, increased use of such PD solutions is expected.
