[ Summary ] The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is substantially high in dialysis patients. They often have low HDL levels, elevated triglyceride (TG) levels, and normal or decreased levels of LDL-cholesterol (C). In this review, the possible mechanisms for the dyslipidemia associated with end-stage renal failure are described since patients with CKD are known to be at high risk of developing CVD, the target LDL-C level should be less than 100 mg / dl for people with CKD. Aggressive lipid lowering techniques using statins in patients with diabetes and receiving hemodialysis treatment had no significant effect on CVD events in the Deutsche Diabetes Dialyse Studie (4D) study. Nevertheless, maintenance of LDL-C levels below 100 mg / dl should continue to be standard practice for all dialysis patients.
