[ Summary ] Elderly patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) complications experience more serious problems than younger patients. This is true not only for physical conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, progressive kidney dysfunction and others but also for emotional and social difficulties.
It is important that nursing staffs should know the natural history of patients well and understand the change in their lives produced by CKD for better control of elderly CKD patients' conditions. Nursing staff members should be able to accurately predict deteriorations in patients' daily lives according to their age and the progression of CKD and its complications. Staff members should find the best ways for patients as well as their families to solve health related problems.
Early intervention by Certified Nurse Specialists is essential to maintain the well-being of elderly CKD patients longer. This intervention system should be developed in major hospitals which manage CKD patients.
