[ Summary ] The usage of erythrocyte stimulating agents is different across three continents. Japanese dialysis patients are maintained at low hemoglobin levels with low doses of EPO. The guidelines for individual countries indicate different target hemoglobin concentrations in light of observational studies or non-randomized low-number weak studies. In 2007 the FDA changed the Boxed Warning for ESA due to results of the CHOIR study. Through discussion of the determination of target hemoglobin concentrations, definite evidence should be established concerning target hemoglobin levels for CKD patients.
