[ Summary ] At the present time, home dialysis material for disposal is classified as domestic refuse and can therefore be discarded in by weekly household garbage collections.
Regarding the above mentioned individual household disposals, there is a rather confused set of circumstances. Local municipal authorities actually do not prohibit disposal in weekly neighborhood collections. However, for safety reasons, garbage collectors are becoming quite selective and ignoring these bags. The reason for this is safety concerns by the garbage collectors.
To clarify the situation we conducted a survey of eleven hospitals and clinics throughout Japan that facilitate home dialysis treatment. Attention was also given to methods patients could employ to more efficiently and safety dispose of these home dialysis waste.
The results of the survey showed that patient disposal is counter to the present law. The actual disposal of the material in municipal garbage was done by just 4.9 % of patients. Most patients (86.6 %) personally take the material to their local hospital or clinic.
The conclusion is that a clearer, more precise plan of action by the Environmental Ministry, Ministry of Health and Labor and regional municipal authorities must be thought out and implemented.
