[ Summary ] Adequate pre-end stage renal disease (ESRD) information and an optimal environment are necessary to allow the patient to make a choice of dialysis modality. If appropriate information is obtained in a timely manner, most elderly patients with ESRD are capable of making an appropriate choice of treatment method.
Along with the progress of peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment, the elderly patients have an excellent outcome even with multiple comorbid conditions. PD is a treatment method that should be considered as the first choice in introducing dialysis treatment in elderly patients. The points to bear in mind in this regard are to believe in the function possessed by the elderly and to support their independence.
The existing nursing care insurance (long-term care insurance) system has problems such as restriction on the function of nurses and helpers. As graying of the society advances, it is desired to establish a more secure system to support the elderly PD patients.
