[ Summary ] Atherosclerosis and malnutrition are the two most important determinants of mortality risk in the hemodialysis population. Inflammation is also commonly involved in these conditions. Blood levels of inflammatory cytokines are generally elevated in hemodialysis patients. Adipocyte-derived adipocytokines are also elevated. This article summarizes recent findings that changes in plasma cytokine levels and related gene polymorphisms are closely related to atherosclerosis and future risk of cardiovascular events in the dialysis population.
