Title ESRD patients in 2005 : an introduction

[ Summary ] At the end of 2005, some 1,900,000 patients were undergoing treatments for ESRD, worldwide. There was a 6 % increase in the rate of ESRD patients, which was larger than that seen in the worldwide population. 1,297,000 patients (89 % of dialysis patients) were receiving conventional hemodialysis treatment, 158,000 patients were receiving peritoneal dialysis, and 412,000 patients were living with a functioning renal transplant. 60 % of hemodialysis patients were treated in three major areas of the world, the United States, the EU, and Japan. The annual rate of increase in the number of hemodialysis patients was 3 - 5 % in those three major areas, and 8 - 10 % in other countries. 73 % of dialyzers, which were used in 2005, were made of synthetic membranes, and 65 % were high-flux. The average rate of increase of PD patients in 2005 was 5 - 6 %, while the number of APD patients increased 8 - 10 %, and the number of CAPD cases increased 3 - 4 %.
