| [ Summary ] | Patients undergoing dialysis therapy are usually in a malnourished state. Further, they need more energy than healthy subjects because they are in a catabolic condition. When these patients undergo digestive system surgery they have a tendency to be in worse nutritional states. It is advisable to employ total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for these patients while in the perioperative period. TPN consists of highly concentrated glucose and amino acid solutions adjusted for chronic renal failure, as well as water soluble vitamins and electrolytes. | |
