[ Summary ] The prevalence of viral hepatitis infections is high in chronic hemodialysis patients. Even if their transaminase values display mild abnormalities, some may develop advanced hepatocellular carcinoima (HCC).
Though therapy is similar to that given to patients without renal failure, the indications and methods must be chosen meticulously because of associated complications such as bleeding tendency, ascites, etc. Timing of treatment is determined by patient liver function, renal function and various complications. Dialysis is necessary after treatment because of the administration of contrast materials, alcohol, acetic acid and anti-cancer agents.
It is considered that education for dialysis patients, nephrologists and co-workers concerning hepatitis infections, and periodic liver function tests, tumor markers and ultrasonographic surveillance are very important.
