[ Summary ] Malignancies of the digestive organs have been the most frequent cause of death of all malignancies in Japan. On the other hand, malignancy is the fourth leading cause of death in patients receiving regular dialysis. It is not clear whether the incidence of malignancies among dialysis patients is larger than that in the general Japanese, population because of a lack of a prospective studies. On the basis of our cross-sectional study, done in the Kyushu-Okinawa area, we speculated that the standardized incidence ratio for malignancies of the digestive organs was higher. Cancers in the liver, colon and stomach were the most frequent cancers of the digestive organs. Since cross sectional study is not accurate enough, prospective study is necessary to accurately demonstrate the SIR for cancer of the digestive organs.
