[ Summary ] Patients receiving hemodialysis frequently suffer from constipation, which is only one type of the common bowel disturbances they experience. This may be caused by an insufficient intake of dietary fiber. Patients tend not to injust food abundant in dietary fiber for fear of simultaneously consuming more potassium, since the potassium content of food is usually proportional to that of dietary fiber. However, if suitable food and ways of cooking it are used, it is possible for patients to have meals abundant in dietary fiber. Furthermore, there are many studies reporting that disturbed bowel movement, due to an insufficient intake of dietary fiber, may be improved by consuming fiber enriched foods. This is one alternative used for these patients. It is necessary to promote gastrocolic reflex by the patient having breakfast and then drinking cold water. It is important to provide dietary support, suitable to individual patients.
