[ Summary ] General practitioners often care for patients who complain of gastrointestinal symptoms localized in the upper middle abdomen (epigastric pain or discomfort ; dyspepsia) without obvious local or general abnormalities, which seem well explain their symptoms. Based on disorders of gastrointestinal function, these conditions have been recognized as “functional dyspepsia”. In cases with possible functional dyspepsia, detailed medical interviews including gathering history, along with good patient -- physician relationships, is essential for proper care. The first step in this process is suitable interpretation of examination results. Prescription of prokinetics and / or acid suppressing drugs such as a histamine-2 receptor antagonists may be recommended. If the initial approach does not work well, psychotherapy, drugs effective for psychiatric disorders (depression or anxiety) as well as a consideration of psychosomatic factors, together with an assessment of hidden organic diseases is necessary.
