[ Summary ] Several biochemical markers such as serum albumin, prealbumin, total cholesterol and creatinine have been used for the assessment of nutritional status of chronic renal failure patients. Serum albumin levels reflect chronic changes in nutritional status, while serum prealbumin reflects shorter-term changes. These biochemical markers are known to be associated with all-cause of mortality. This is especially so in relation to serum albumin and cardiovascular events. Since malnutrition is closely related to systemic inflammation and atherosclerosis, it is necessary to conduct comprehensive biochemical assessments employing the measurement of serum C-reactive proteins. In addition, establishment of new nutritional guidelines for Japanese dialysis patients will be required to assess nutritional status more accurately.
