[ Summary ] Clinical practice guidelines should be the standard target for physicians to attain in the treatment for patients. It has been ten years since the Japanese Society of Nephrology reported clinical practice guidelines for diet therapy in kidney diseases. Over those 10 years, therapeutic strategies for kidney diseases have changed and new findings in the field of nutrition have emerged. Furthermore, new standardized nutritional intake levels for the Japanese population have been developed. In this context, guidelines for diet therapy in diabetic nephropathy should be revised in relation to the classifications of disease stages and intake of protein, salt and energy, based on current clinical evidences and experts' opinions. The Japanese Society of Nephrology has organized a committee to revise these guidelines.
