[ Summary ] The current guidelines for dietary therapy in patients with chronic renal failure have been used for a decade. Although many other strategies have been developed during this decade, diet therapy still has it's share of the mainstream use for treating chronic renal failure. However, it appears that this is the right time to revise the guidelines, based on recent advances in diet therapy. The amount of protein and energy intake should be decided on in terms of the balance between effectiveness and safety in both low protein diets and the dialysis diets. New guidelines are recommended for use by not only nephrologists but, also general physicians and dietitians. It may also be useful in patient based decision making for dietary therapy.
