[ Summary ] The pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome consists of two major factors ; subnormal blood pressure elevation and mild diabetes and abnormalities in lipid metabolism, those are produced by obesity. The progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is promoted by several factors including high blood pressure, high plasma glucose concentrations, obesity and others. An increase in the number of these factors produces an increase in the frequency of kidney disease. Further, treatment for targeting these factors prevents progression of CKD. Considering this evidence, it is suggested that metabolic syndrome plays an important role in the progression of CKD.
