[ Summary ] In the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome established in Japan in April 2005, waist circumference (Wc) was adopted an indispensable component marker of visceral fat accumulation. The cutoff points were 85 cm for men and 90 cm for women, based on the cutoff values of visceral fat area determined by CT scans. In addition to having a large Wc, two or more of three components such as dyslipidemia, hypertension and hyperglycemia lead to a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Recently, it has been found that visceral fat accumulation causes dysregulation of adipose-derived secretory factors, and accumulation of ‘adipocytekines’ which play a crucial role in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. At this time we are also conducting a trial concerning health intervention for a large group of city officers from the standpoint of metabolic syndrome. This intervention may be useful as a strategy for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
