[ Summary ] After the Mid Niigata Prefecture Earthquake in 2004, treatment was unavailable for about 340 maintenance dialysis patients at three dialysis providing hospitals. This was due to power failure, suspension of water supply, and water processing unit damage. Dialysis doctors in the Nagaoka area arranged for patients to be accepted at other dialysis hospitals the next day. Since the dialysis hospitals where patients were moved accepted them in the early stages of the crisis, the dialysis patient in the stricken area were not neglected.
The hospital administration, through the use of mass communications, supported necessary data gathering and made offers to help with patient transfers. On the homepage for disaster information of the Japanese Association of Dialysis Physicians, the latest information was provided for dialysis hospitals in the stricken area and other areas.
Dialysis hospitals in the Niigata area and outside the prefecture supported the disaster relief from outside the stricken area. With these hospitals cooperating, dialysis patient's treatment was insured and the necessary dialysis staff member were dispatched.
